Sammy Dean Communitree Mural
Well the majority of our mural is up and ready to be grouted. After several rescheduled due to California's unpredictable weather we are again delayed in our grouting. Sammy's Dad was able to make it out to mosaic with Gaby, myself and some other volunteers over memorial day weekend and a dedication ceremony will be help June 6 at 2 pm at Upper Brookside campus. It says weather should clear up on Tuesday the 3rd so hopefully we will get to grout and touch up to finish out the school year. Jim Dean brought us a very treasured orange leaf that Sammy herself made before she passed away and we were able to place this in the upper left corner of the tree. What a wonderful gift that was to receive. Amongst other goodies are slices of pizza friends made out of tile, lady bugs, birds, rats, mice and even cheese are included in this Tree of Life Mural. It's been a joy and a pleasure. |www.tammyleestudio.com
Sammy Dean CommuniTree Project
Brookside Elementary School’s CommuniTree Project honors the memory of one of our own – Samantha Dean, an incoming 5th grader who passed away unexpectedly this past summer. The CommuniTree will be a permanently installed wall mural that will remember and celebrate Sammy’s life by providing her school friends and the community an opportunity to artistically express themselves in a way that celebrates and honors life. Samantha Dean, also known as Sammy D, is a former student of both Wade Thomas and Brookside schools. If you look at her pictures, you can see that she is a very happy person who has amazingly curly hair, a huge smile and an even bigger heart. You have to agree - you don’t often see crazier hair or bigger smiles on people.

The thing is – although her heart was big, it also had a problem and it stopped working in the summer of 2009. She will be missed in many ways by many people………………..

But, at the same time, her big heart is continuing to bring people together and we are all celebrating that here, at Brookside School, by the making of this big, big, big, big, big – Communitree. Sam would have loved to be a part of this project and so – she is!

Sammy D was able to absorb sadness from others in a way that made the person who was sad - feel a little better. Even at her young age she understood that sadness comes and goes - and that when it’s not there – it makes you really appreciate being happy.

Communitree Mural, Upper Brookside School, San Anselmo for Samantha Dean
The “Communitree”:Samantha Dean Memorial Art Project
This project will be installed on the exterior column at upper brookside school in San Anselmo, Ca. It will be up to 10 feet tall and most of it will be between 4 and 8 feet wide, with the exception of upper branches which will wrap around the corners of the building so that some of it can be seen as you drive up to the campus, teasing the eye around the column. It will be in the shape of a tree, specifically it will be a tree of life. This tree of life will be named “Communitree” a term coined by Susan Pascal Beran as part of her sculpture series representing such trees as are collaborated on by a community. But this tree will be mostly a mosaic mural with relief, worked on and designed by many of the numerous talented artists and community members we live with. More information on the wonderful folks involved will be forthcoming. The trunk, much of roots and branches, will be cast pigmented concrete over a metal armature and wire and mesh substructure. This particular surface will be embedded with words of hopes and dreams from our children, as well as a heart with the Initials B.S. loves S.D. (Brookside loves Samantha Dean). Trees of life represent the connectedness of all things, and so in their branches and in their roots are found all animals, flowers, stars, rainbows, suns, etc. These will be fabricated by our children and community members. It will be colorful and joyful.
Fabrication is commencing as part of the curriculum in the upper campus where children are creating clay leaves and other things, and also at www.Artabloom.com studios as time and materials donated by its owner, Gabriella Drake. She is specifically making this opportunity available to folks who are not necessarily a direct part of the Brookside school system . Both She and Tammy Sullivan, another amazing mosaic artist will be working with students at Brookside Lower Campus. So they, and other volunteer artists, parents, teachers such as Rita Child, and community members will be assisting with fabrication, firing, glazing, installation and dedication to be done by May of 2010. We have a website which will is almost complete and will be posted soon.To find out more about how you can be involved please contact s_pascalberan@earthlink.net
